In such a simple way, you can make not only a round hole in red-hot steel, but also a hole of any other shape in without too much effort. The chemical method will help you out and facilitate the task. The method does not require expensive chemicals, all the ingredients can be found in any household.

Will need

I propose a simple method of making holes in high speed steel. To work, you will need:
  • any product made of high speed steel;
  • marker;
  • nail polish;
  • nail polish remover (can be replaced with white spirit or acetone. I chose the nail polish remover only because of the pleasant smell, and this is the same acetone);
  • cotton wool;
  • empty plastic container (bottle);
  • salt;
  • knife;
  • Homemade device from a charger and two nails.

Making a hole in the metal without a drill

We apply liquid polish remover to the cotton wool and degrease the surface of our workpiece.

Apply varnish to the desired area. Varnish should be applied in a thick layer on both sides. Do not forget to carefully grease the ends. Leave the workpiece for 10-15 minutes to dry the varnish.

On a dried surface with a marker on both sides of the workpiece I mark a place under the hole. I choose a place arbitrarily, now I need to show how this hole can be made. For example, you need to put a regular factory rivet. The diameter of the hole should be slightly smaller than the size of the rivet.

Then use a knife to remove the varnish inside the contour of the hole. Do it from two sides.

Pour water into the container and add 3 tablespoons of salt. The height of the water in the tank should be 10 mm less than the height of the blank area coated with varnish.

I take a device made from the charger of a hair clipper and two nails. Nails will act as electrodes - I connected them to one pin. Another contact is just a bare stripped wire. I use a 12V charger, but a regular charger from a mobile phone will cope with this task.

The stripped wire should be a plus, the electrodes - a minus. We attach the positive wire with a clothespin to our workpiece. Then we lower the nails into the water.

You can make slots in the container to fix the position of the nails. Including the charger in the outlet. After switching on, the water around the nails-electrodes begins to bubble, and the cleaned mark under the hole turns black.

Note: to check the polarity of the wires, you must connect the charger. If the water begins to bubble around the nails, then this is a minus and you connected correctly. The appearance of bubbles in the water around the workpiece says that the minus is connected to it and you need to throw the wires. The minus must always be connected to the electrodes, plus - to the workpiece processed by etching!
Leave the container for one hour, 30 minutes after the start of the process, change the water. I turn off the charger and pull out the workpiece.

A through hole formed at the intended location. In order to make the diameter of the hole larger, the process can be continued. Or file rough edges with a file.
So, by etching high-speed steel using the most common items, you can make the right hole in the workpiece.
