How to clean the sink drain

If water does not “go out” in the sink where you wash the dishes or brush your teeth, you can clean the drain in three ways, without having much experience as a plumber.

Cleaning with a twig

The most common and inexpensive way to clean the sink at home, at a party, at work - is to "clean with a twig." It can be easily found on the street in the nearest courtyard.

The twig should be non-breaking, flexible, suitable for the diameter of the openings of your drain bowl. Length from 30 to 40 cm.

Inserting a twig into one of the holes in the drain bowl, scroll it with rotational movements clockwise (the action can be compared to twisting the handle of a meat grinder).

Scrolling is mandatory, it will allow you to wind as much dirt as possible on the rough surface of the twig, which impedes the passage of water in the sink.

Such movements must be done in each hole of the drain bowl.

Vent plunger cleaning

Surely, every house has a plunger. If the plunger is not at hand, take it to work or borrow from a neighbor. The method of cleaning the sink with a plunger may be in addition to the first method. The plunger should be easy to use, and its working surface should be similar to a suction cup in its action.
Before proceeding to work, we plug a tightly overflow hole in the sink (using a flat screwdriver and a piece of cloth) to create a vacuum effect inside the hollow sewage system.

Pour water (not hot, so as not to burn yourself), pre-plugging the drain hole with a plunger, if at the moment there is no water in the sink.

When working as a plunger, try not to push the water forward, as many are used to thinking, but to pull all the water out of the sewer. The forward movement should be insignificant so that the plunger simply with its weight is pulled to the surface of the sink, like a suction cup. The work of the plunger is to pull the plunger towards you to create a suction under the plunger surface.

As a result of your plunger operation, the blockage should go to the surface of the sink, and not push further.

Siphon and Corrugation Flask Cleaning

Sewer drain under the sink (water trap), as a rule, is performed in two versions:
  • Using a curved corrugation in the form of the letter "w", corrugated tube.
  • Using a siphon flask in the form of a "glass" and the same corrugation.

In this case, we will show how to clean the drain using the example of a flask siphon with corrugation. You need to prepare a bin or basin in advance, we carry out all further actions on it.
We disconnect the “glass” (siphon flask) from the outlet and the corrugation by unscrewing the two nuts.

Release is, in simple terms, the drain cup that we mentioned in the first method. It is not necessary to remove the issue, since we have already cleaned it with a twig (according to the instructions in the first method).

Our task is to clean the flask. To do this, unscrew the lid at the bottom of the "glass".

We take a flat thin screwdriver and clean the flask inside from dirt. Then screw the lid back. We proceed to cleaning the corrugations.

Disconnect it from the sewer line located in the floor.

We try to shake the contents of the corrugation into a bucket.

After cleaning the flask with the corrugation, we collect everything in place in the order in which they were disassembled (insert the corrugation into the sewer line, connect the siphon flask to the outlet, then to the corrugation).
