Catalytic combustion is a very simple and entertaining experiment.

Today I will show you how to make a home nuclear reactor. I hope you have a good sense of humor, then let's get started. To build a mini reactor you will need a glass jar.

Copper wire with a diameter of about 1 mm. Preliminary, remove varnish insulation from the surface of the wire.

In the role of thermonuclear fuel, simple acetone will be used.

We make a spiral of wire by wrapping it on a round object of the desired diameter.

We’ll make such a ring out of the lid, cutting out the center. We make holes and hang the wire. Of course, the wire can immediately be hung on a jar without a lid.

The spiral of copper wire should hang freely in the jar and not touch its edges. There should be a distance of about 1 cm from the bottom of the can to the spiral.

We start our reactor

Pour acetone onto the bottom of the can. About half a centimeter. We close the jar with another lid so that the acetone vapor does not evaporate.

We heat the spiral with a gas burner.

It is necessary to heat it up to red, otherwise the reaction will not start.

And then quickly, but without haste, put the spiral into a jar of acetone.

The reaction has begun. It looks just amazingly impressive.

Very beautiful in complete darkness.

The catalytic oxidation of copper in acetone vapor has begun. The reaction proceeds with the release of heat. Combustion is stable for quite a long time.

Precautionary measures

  • Conduct an experiment in a well-ventilated area.
  • When working with a burner and acetone, do not accidentally set fire to one from the other.
  • Be very careful and careful.

Be sure to watch the video of this bewitching experiment.
